As Valentine’s Day approaches, so does the demand for flowers. In fact, according to the Society of American Florists, the holiday ranks number one for floral purchases, trumping even Mother’s Day for number of transactions (30% to 26%).
What do you need to know about flowers? We checked in with Eric Luoma, president/owner of Cactus Flower Florists—a Scottsdale-based company that, for 53 years, has been family-owned and -operated—for his insights.
Consumers are becoming more interested in sustainable and eco-friendly flowers. Can you tell us about them?
Sustainable and eco-friendly flowers are those that have been grown in ways to minimize environmental harm and maintain healthy ecosystems. Florals that are grown in their desired season require fewer artificial inputs. Roses, tulips and carnations are examples of some popular varieties that are grown in a way that supports environmental conservation.
We source most of our flowers from sustainable farms around the world, but a large portion come straight from California, an option we choose to reduce the distance the flowers travel helping to lower transportation emissions.
Roses are always popular on Valentine’s Day, but what are some other flowers to consider?
Flowers, specifically red roses, have long been associated with Valentine’s Day, representing love, passion, and desire. At Cactus Flower Florists, we take pride in our exclusive designs that feature a wide variety of assorted flowers. Tulips, carnations, lilies, and peonies are all wonderful options for the most romantic holiday of the year. An alternative to the classics are tropical florals like orchids, birds of paradise, and protea.
Anything people should know about flowers for Valentine’s Day?
In addition to offering a wide variety of beautiful flowers, we also feature green plants, succulent gardens, spa gift baskets, wine and champagne, and much more. We’re the only local florist in Arizona to deliver alcohol to our customers. Roses and rosé are the perfect pairing!
Why use a local florist?
When shopping locally, consumers are not only supporting families and small businesses, but they are also helping the local economy. We offer premium customer service and have many options to meet the needs of our customers, including delivery on the same day! Plus, your flowers are beautifully designed in a vase by floral experts instead of being left on your doorstep in a box needing to be assembled.
How can we keep flowers fresh longer once they’re delivered?
To keep your flowers looking fresh longer, it’s important to change the water every couple of days, ensuring any bacteria is removed and the blooms stay vibrant. When changing the water, give the stems a fresh cut at a 45-degree angle to help them absorb water more effectively. Avoid placing your flowers in direct sunlight or near heat sources, as this can cause them to wilt prematurely. Be sure to remove any decaying petals or leaves from the water and use flower preservative for added longevity. By following these simple tips, you can enjoy your bouquet for an extended period, keeping it beautiful and fresh!
