Hearth 61 Restaurant in Scottsdale, AZ

Hearth ‘61 evokes images of being welcomed home, and Hearth ‘61 is perhaps one of the most locals oriented resort restaurants in Scottsdale. Located at Mountain Shadows Resort, the eatery offers many special events to keep locals coming back for more.

Helmed by renowned Scottsdale chef, Charles Wiley, Hearth ‘61 focuses on modern cuisine served small plate style to encourage sharing, classic entrees and a roast of the day. There’s a very locavore approach to the menu, with ingredients sourced from local purveyors like Niman Ranch, Duncan’s Trading Company, Two Wash Ranch and more.

On a recent visit for dinner, my friend and I started off the meal sharing the ahi tartare. This dish elevates the poke bowl trend pairing sushi grade tuna with Persian cucumbers, shaved turnips and shishito peppers and puffed rice chips to scoop it all into a delicious bite. For the main event I chose the day-boat scallops paired with wood-roasted sunchokes and sugar snap peas, while my friend went with the Niman Ranch tenderloin prepared in a red wine demi glace with blue cheese fondue and truffle mash.

The special roasts of the day are a signature of Hearth 61 and feature carnivore favorites like prime rib and venison loan and lighter dishes such as Friday’s monkfish or Monday’s vegetarian garden roast.

I wish I could say we skipped dessert, but the flourless chocolate torte with a caramel java chip cream was too tempting to resist.

One Sunday a month, Hearth ‘61 turns into your own classic, private supper club with its Sunday Supper Club event. The evening highlights one local supplier and winery or distillery. Throughout the night you’ll feast on four courses paired with beverages and have the chance to interact with Chef Wiley and the featured guest. Upcoming super clubs are Feb. 24 (Robert Craig Winery), March 24 (Frank Family Vineyards) and April 7 (Duncan’s Trading Co. and WillaKenzie).

In addition to great food, Hearth ‘61 really knows its wine. In fact it's the only location in Arizona to host a Level 1 Sommelier Certification Course through the Court of Master Sommeliers. For more casual oenophiles and cocktail connoisseurs, the restaurant offers Spirited Sipping Seminars. Each class is led by an expert pairing knowledge and tasting in under an hour. Choose from upcoming workshops like the March 9th Chardonnay: Hip or Hype? Or the March 23rd Rye: Bourbon’s Smarter, Cooler Cousin.
