10th Annual Pinewood Classic

April 5 @ 12:00 pm - 5:00 pm

The Pinewood Classic, a grassroots event known for its high-energy races and wildly creative car designs, is back for its 10th year at Title 9 Sports Grill on Saturday, April 5, 2025! Originating from a simple wish to create a pinewood car without adult interference, this event has grown into a lively annual tradition where adults get to channel their inner child and compete in a fun and inclusive race.

“This event started as a way for adults to have the fun they may have missed out on as kids, and over the years, it has evolved into an incredible community gathering where everyone gets to showcase their creativity and competitive spirit,” said Kat Moore, co-founder of the Pinewood Classic.

Moore and her husband Brad founded the Pinewood Classic ten years ago, and the highly anticipated event has always been hosted at their beloved restaurant, Short Leash Hot Dogs, in the Melrose District of Phoenix. Now, as co-founders of Phoenix’s first female-inspired establishment, Title 9 Sports Bar, the Moores are excited to continue the tradition at their new venue.

“We want to encourage more creative women to enter the race,” added Moore. “This event is all about inclusion, and many women and girls have never had the opportunity to build a pinewood car since its traditionally only been a Boy Scout event. People travel from out of state just to participate, and that means the world to us. It’s a chance for neighbors to come together, bring their families and dogs, and enjoy some good, old-fashioned fun.”

Unlike traditional Pinewood Derby events, which are often associated with the Boy Scouts, the Pinewood Classic is all about the adults. While a kids’ race takes place in the afternoon, the evening competition is reserved for grown-ups who design and race their own cars, starting from the same standard pinewood block. Entries range from sleek, aerodynamic designs to outlandishly decorated masterpieces, with awards given for Best Design, Best Team Spirit, and Race Champion.

Returning as Emcee is Adrian Fontes, who has been part of the event since the beginning. Last year, Fontes, serving as Acting Governor on the day of the event, issued an Official Proclamation declaring it ‘The Official Pinewood Classic Day’, further cementing its place in the community’s culture. While the core of the event remains the same, Moore and her team at Title 9 are particularly excited about increasing women’s participation this year.

Attendees can expect:

  • A custom-built track designed by Porter Barnwood
  • A beer garden sponsored by a women-owned brewery (TBD)
  • Balloon artists for kids during the daytime races
  • A unique event poster designed by a different artist each year

The Pinewood Classic has remained a truly grassroots event, relying not on sponsorships but on the enthusiasm of the community. The event kicks off with the kids’ race at 12 pm on Saturday, April 5 at Title 9 Sports Grill located at 4221 N 7th Ave, Phoenix. The adult races begin at 5 pm. Attendees can look forward to an evening of high-energy competition, cold drinks, and plenty of laughs. For more information or to register, visit https://www.titleninesportsgrill.com/store.
