As Valentine’s Day approaches, so does the demand for flowers. In fact, according to the Society of American Florists, the holiday ranks number one for floral purchases, trumping even Mother’s Day for the number of transactions (30% to 26%).
Red roses, of course, are synonymous with the day. But many others turn to mixed bouquets or plants—or even gift baskets, succulent gardens, wine, and more.
Before clicking on a “purchase” link, there are a few things to consider if you’re planning to gift flowers this year.
Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Flowers
“Sustainable” and “eco-friendly” are terms used more often with flowers as more consumers are becoming aware of where their flowers are being grown and how they impact the environment.
“Sustainable and eco-friendly flowers are those that have been grown in ways to minimize environmental harm and maintain healthy ecosystems,” explains Eric Luoma, president/owner of Cactus Flower Florists, a Scottsdale-based company that, for 53 years, has been family-owned and -operated. “Florals that are grown in their desired season require fewer artificial inputs. Roses, tulips and carnations are examples of some popular varieties that are grown in a way that supports environmental conservation.”
While Cactus Flower Florists sources most of its flowers from sustainable farms around the world, a large portion are from California, Luoma says, explaining that “[it’s] an option we choose to reduce the distance the flowers travel helping to lower transportation emissions.”
Purchasing Locally
Where you purchase your flowers is another point to consider. Turning to a local florist supports small businesses, families, and the local economy. There are also some perks that other companies can’t—or don’t want to—match.
Want to avoid your flowers being left on a doorstep in a box needing to be assembled? Local florists will deliver a hand-arranged bouquet in a vase, and often, offer same-day services.
Looking for Alternatives to Roses?
While roses are the most popular purchase as they represent love, passion, and desire, some other stems to consider are tulips, carnations, lilies, and peonies. There are also tropical florals such as orchids, birds of paradise, and protea.
Some florists also have spa gift baskets, wine, and more options.
“We also feature green plants, succulent gardens, spa gift baskets, wine and champagne, and much more. We’re the only local florist in Arizona to deliver alcohol to our customers. Roses and rosé are the perfect pairing!” Luoma shares.
Make Them Last!
Received flowers? Of course, you’ll want to keep them looking fresh for as long as possible.
“To keep your flowers looking fresh longer, it’s important to change the water every couple of days, ensuring any bacteria is removed and the blooms stay vibrant. When changing the water, give the stems a fresh cut at a 45-degree angle to help them absorb water more effectively,” Luoma advises. “Avoid placing your flowers in direct sunlight or near heat sources, as this can cause them to wilt prematurely. Be sure to remove any decaying petals or leaves from the water and use flower preservative for added longevity. By following these simple tips, you can enjoy your bouquet for an extended period, keeping it beautiful and fresh!”
