FEATURE FRIDAY: Michael and Rebecca Costa on Fitness Ventures, Dreams, and What They Can’t Live Without
By Michelle Glicksman | February 7, 2025

Michael and Rebecca Costa moved to Scottsdale from California and are pursuing their dreams of bringing amazing fitness modalities to the Valley. The couple is celebrating the eighth anniversary of their BURN Lagree Fitness, which has two locations. Michael recently opened the indoor cycling studio Scottsdale Indoor Cycle.
Here, they talk about their fitness ventures, dreams, and what they can’t live without.
You moved to Scottsdale from the SF Bay Area. Why here?
Scottsdale, and the wider Valley, has so much to offer. Naturally the casual, outdoor centric vibe, great culture, and food offerings allows for a well-balanced life.
You now own both BURN studios and Scottsdale Indoor Cycle. Can you tell us about them?
BURN opened its doors in 2017 and has grown into a phenomenal community. BURN offers Lagree Fitness, a very efficient, high intensity, low impact workout based on a patented Megarformer. We’ve worked hard over the past eight years educating locals and continually developing a team that represents BURN and the modality’s benefits. We have two locations and will continue to thoughtfully grow the brand.
Michael: I am a cardio junky and get my fix on a bike with great music and lights. For years, I was an avid road cyclist. An opportunity to open Scottsdale Indoor Cycling (SIC) occurred last summer. SIC embodies a fun, intense cycling experience with amazing lights and music to keep the workout fun.
Why did you choose these fitness focuses?
We started practicing Lagree Fitness in 2015 and immediately experienced the physical and mental benefits. The decision to open BURN was very intentional; SIC was more opportunistic.
Cycling is more Michael’s project, while Rebecca has offered her experience with overall studio front-facing engagement and social media.
Michael: For me, these two modalities cover all the bases: cardiovascular and strength training, core, and stability training.
Why is fitness a priority for you?
Michael: The benefits of consistent, intense workouts are well documented. Being active is a choice. I choose fitness for movement, mental and physical strength, and longevity.
Rebecca: As a yoga instructor for years prior to teaching Lagree Fitness, the two for me have really balanced out my overall mind and body connection. While I love teaching, mentoring new instructors, and taking Lagree classes, yoga at my favorite studio remains my place to reset.
Personal favorite exercise move and least favorite?
Michael: Without question, Lagree Fitness is the foundation that makes every aspect of my life better. I will practice Lagree Fitness long after BURN. My least favorite exercise is running (sorry, runners).
Rebecca: Tricky question, because had you asked me this prior to SIC opening I would’ve said I’m allergic to hardcore cardio, but after a few classes with the fantastic instructors there and amazing new space, I can say with confidence I’m at least a weekly visit. I will always prioritize Lagree and yoga.
When you’re not working, we’d find you …
Michael: I recently joined Mesa Country Club. That’s a good bet!
Rebecca: I do love quiet time when I can get it, so chilling at home always works for me.
One thing you can’t live without …
Michael: Music.
Rebecca: As cliche as it sounds, my three dogs, a great book, and a glass of wine.
I’m inspired by …
Michael: Human connection.
Rebecca: Reminders (people close to me, situations, etc.) that when hiccups occur, you put intention out there, and things do work out in the end.
Biggest dream?
Michael: I don’t necessarily have a big dream. An optimistic by nature, I’ve learned over the years to embrace living in the present and enjoy the journey. There are many journeys. I think it is more important to focus on what I value: family, community, helping others.
