Known as The Performance Psychiatrist™, Brook Choulet, M.D., is a board-certified psychiatrist who specializes in concierge sports and performance psychiatry. She works with high-achieving individuals, including athletes, executives, and professionals, to optimize their mental health and performance.
“I founded Choulet Performance Psychiatry® to provide exceptional personalized mental health care that goes beyond traditional models, helping individuals achieve sustained success in all areas of life,” she says.
Choulet completed a 6-year accelerated B.A./M.D. program and received her M.D. at the age of 26.
Outside of the office, she serves as the president of the American Board of Sports and Performance Psychiatry, as well as the president of the Maricopa County Medical Society Foundation.
What is Performance Psychiatry®?
Performance Psychiatry is a term I coined that describes mental health care with a focus on optimizing mental well-being and performance for individuals in high-pressure environments. It goes beyond treating mental health conditions—it’s about helping individuals manage stress, build resilience, sharpen focus, and maintain peak performance in their careers and personal lives.
Who does it benefit/who do you work with?
I work with professional and elite athletes, high-level executives, entrepreneurs, their family members, and other high-performing individuals. My clients range from adolescents and college athletes to professionals at the top of their fields who are seeking to enhance their mental resilience and overall well-being.
How did you get into this field?
When I started my boutique group practice, it was a concierge psychiatry clinic that provided personalized care to individuals, eliminating the barriers to receiving the help you need, when you need it. I quickly realized that athletes benefited from concierge medical services, as it’s often difficult for them to receive medical or mental health care within the traditional Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. insurance-based models.
I truly saw a gap in the traditional mental health care system—high achievers, particularly in sports and business, needed specialized, proactive support. This inspired me to build a practice that offers concierge-level care tailored to the unique needs of performers, bridging the gap between mental health and peak performance.
I wanted to maximize convenience by traveling to them, reducing some of the obstacles that come with seeking mental health care. All of my patients have my cell phone number and email address and have no shortage of ways to get in touch with me at any time.
You have been a consulting team psychiatrist for numerous sports organizations. Can you share some?
I have been a consulting team psychiatrist for various professional sports organizations and player associations, including teams in the NBA and WNBA, as well as the USOPC, USSF, NBPA, NFLPA, and MLBPA. I am also the Leader Mental Health Clinician for Team USA Handball.
Your favorite place in Scottsdale to go to clear your mind?
At the spa! I am guilty of loving a spa day at The Phoenician to unwind and prioritize rest and recovery.
Your own happy place?
Spending time with my family and loved ones—whether it’s traveling, enjoying a great meal, or just having a relaxing day. My personal happy place is in my pajamas watching TV with a warm blanket.
If you could visit anywhere in the world, it would be …
Traveling back to Bora Bora. Our honeymoon there was an absolute dream, and I can’t wait to go back.
Motto you live by?
“Be so good they can’t ignore you.” – Steve Martin
