FEATURE FRIDAY: Kiya Dentz on Functional Medicine, Acupuncture, and Why She Chose Scottsdale
By Michelle Glicksman | December 6, 2024
Kiya Dentz is a dedicated acupuncturist and functional medicine practitioner who is passionate about empowering individuals to reclaim their health and vitality. She utilizes a unique blend of traditional acupuncture, cutting-edge bioenergetic testing, and a holistic approach to wellness to address the root causes of health challenges, rather than just managing symptoms, at her practice Scottsdale Family Acupuncture.
“I aim to create personalized, effective treatment plans that prioritize long-term healing,” she explains. “I believe in the power of connection and understanding, taking the time to truly listen to my patients’ needs. Whether through acupuncture, customized supplement protocols, or exploring new modalities like Qest4 bioenergetic testing, my goal is to help patients find clarity and resolution in their health journeys. Above all, I am committed to creating a space where patients feel supported, respected, and inspired to achieve their best health.”
We caught up with Dentz to ask about her work, Scottsdale, and what we’d be surprised to learn about her. Here’s what she had to say.
Tell us about Scottsdale Family Acupuncture.
Scottsdale Family Acupuncture is a holistic wellness clinic dedicated to helping individuals achieve optimal health through personalized care. We specialize in acupuncture, functional medicine, and bioenergetic testing, integrating time-tested traditional methods with innovative approaches to resolve health issues at their root. Our mission is to empower patients with effective, compassionate care, addressing their unique needs to promote long-term wellness. With a commitment to understanding each patient’s journey, we provide tailored treatment plans designed to restore balance, vitality, and well-being.
What types of conditions do you treat?
We specialize in treating a wide range of conditions, including chronic pain, hormonal imbalances, digestive disorders, stress and anxiety, fatigue, and autoimmune conditions. Our holistic approach addresses both physical and emotional health, helping patients achieve balance and long-term wellness. We also support fertility, skin health, and overall immune function through personalized, integrative care.
Do people come in for preventative treatments or is it more if you have a condition you’re trying to treat?
While some patients visit us for preventative treatments to maintain overall wellness and balance, most come seeking solutions for specific conditions they haven’t been able to resolve elsewhere. Many individuals turn to acupuncture as a last resort after trying other approaches, but we’re seeing a shift as more people recognize its effectiveness as a primary tool for healing and prevention. Our goal is to meet patients wherever they are in their health journey and provide the care they need to thrive.
What drew you to holistic healing?
I have always been drawn to practicing medicine, but my personal experiences as a patient inspired me to explore alternative approaches that align with my vision of care—harnessing the body’s natural ability to heal itself. Through shadowing various alternative practitioners, I discovered Traditional Chinese Medicine and was captivated by its empowering philosophy. It’s a form of medicine that truly works with the body, guiding it toward self-healing and restoration.
Ok, does acupuncture hurt—it’s needles! Talk to us scaredy cats!
It’s completely normal to feel a little nervous about needles! The truth is, acupuncture needles are nothing like the ones used for shots or blood draws—they’re incredibly thin, about the width of a human hair. Most people feel little to no discomfort when the needles are inserted, and even find the experience relaxing. If you’re nervous, we’ll take it slow, explain everything, and make sure you’re comfortable every step of the way. Acupuncture is designed to support and calm your body, not stress it out! We treat babies and children without problems!
Why did you choose to open in Scottsdale?
Scottsdale is a vibrant community that values health, wellness, and innovation, making it the perfect place to bring holistic healing to those seeking better health. I wanted to be part of a community where people are open to exploring new ways of improving their well-being, whether through acupuncture, functional medicine, or other integrative approaches. Scottsdale’s commitment to living well aligns beautifully with my mission to help individuals find balance and thrive in their everyday lives.
When you’re not working, you are …
When I’m not working, I enjoy spending time with my family, exploring the beauty of nature, traveling to new places, and indulging in delicious food. I also have a deep passion for learning, so you’ll often find me researching and studying to stay inspired and bring fresh ideas to my practice.
For relaxation you …
For relaxation, I love giving myself acupuncture—it’s a great way to recharge! I also enjoy soaking in a warm bath, spending time in nature, and unwinding with my family. These simple joys help me stay balanced and rejuvenated.
One thing we’d be surprised to learn about you?
One thing that might surprise you is that I’m actually an introvert! Even though I can talk to anyone and genuinely enjoy connecting with people, I recharge best with quiet time to myself. It’s a balance that keeps me grounded.
