With the recent rains in Scottsdale, we thought it was the perfect time to check in with Robert Lunny, president of Kore Roofing. Kore Roofing is a Scottsdale-based full-service residential and commercial roofing contractor. The company’s team has over 30 years of combined experience installing, repairing, and replacing all types of roofs.
Here, Lunny talks about what to know about dealing with leaks, common roofing mistakes, and the crazy things they’ve seen when repairing roofs.
What inspired the launch of Kore Roofing?
My partners and I started Kore Roofing after dealing with our own frustrating experiences on our commercial properties and homes. We kept running into contractors who didn’t communicate, didn’t follow through, and didn’t treat the job with care. Instead of putting up with it, we decided to build the type of roofing company we wished existed, one that protects people, communicates clearly, and shows up the right way.
Three words that describe the company:
Skilled, caring, and honest.
What’s your go-to advice for someone dealing with storm or leak damage?
Act quickly, document everything, and speak with your insurance broker about your coverage. Also, check whether you have an existing warranty from a home builder, a previous roofer, or the manufacturer of the materials. Many homeowners don’t realize they may already have workmanship or material protection available before paying out of pocket.
What’s a common roofing mistake you wish homeowners knew to avoid?
A big mistake homeowners make is going back to the same contractor who caused the problem in the first place. If a company didn’t install or repair your roof correctly, using them again usually leads to repeat issues. Choose a reputable, licensed roofer who stands behind their work and provides a real warranty. It protects your home now and gives you a reliable partner when it’s time for a full replacement later.
If a roof isn’t leaking, does that mean it’s good to go?
A roof can fail long before water shows up. Leaks are usually the last symptom, not the first.
Do you have a favorite roofing material or style (e.g., metal, tile, foam)?
Tile and foam both handle Arizona heat well and help with energy efficiency.
Any crazy roofing stories?
We’ve found everything from massive beehives, discovered three or more layers of shingles when starting shingle re-roofs, and rotted decking on what was supposed to be a new roof replacement. Nothing surprises us anymore!
Any innovations on the horizon that we should know about for roofs?
Better underlayments, reflective coatings, stronger materials like fiber fortified silicone mastic that helps repairs lasts longer, and technology around how we standardize our pre, during, and post roof phases so customers get a detailed inside look to how their roof is constructed by us.
When you’re not working, we’d find you …
Watching sports with my kids or cooking for my family.
Favorite places around Scottsdale?
Scottsdale sunsets are the best I have seen. Old Town for its great food spots, energy, and history.
