Whether you are a diehard fan of Macayo's twelve Arizona locations or haven't dined there in awhile, the iconic Mexican restaurant location in Scottsdale has something special in store for its guests. Under the new name Macayo's Mexican Grill & Cantina, an evolution in décor, branding, culinary offerings and libations has occurred and the results are nothing short of outstanding.
The décor at Macayo's Mexican Grill & Cantina utilizes tones of brown and pumpkin with bold pops of black and white coupled with distinctive and rustic-yet-modern lighting fixtures which all tie together perfectly to usher in its new look. The restaurant also boasts a spacious patio with misters; perfect for enjoying meals and cocktails outside.
It's no secret that the individual taste buds of restaurant guests evolve over time. Macayo's has answered this by incorporating some wonderful and new menu items while still including the dishes that generations of guests have come to love.
Three particular menu items really illustrate the culinary edge that the new Macayo's Mexican Grill & Cantina has taken.
First is the small plates offering of Fried Avocado. Equal parts creamy, smooth and slightly crunchy, the tasty avocados are set atop a firm chip and accompanied by Pepe's Picante Salsa, queso fresco, chipotle crema and cilantro. Next, the Bosio's Shrimp was a fresh and distinguished entrée with tender sautéed shrimp and Bosio's Red Chipotle Sauce on top of a bed of perfectly cooked cilantro rice. The entrée was flavorful and had a good kick of spice but was light and refreshing, too. The night of our media visit we also had quite a surprise when we received the Jicama Shrimp Tacos. The street-sized tacos included lightly fried shrimp complimented with fresh fruit salsa and were served in a large slice of jicama, folded to serve as a taco shell! It was fresh, innovative, totally unexpected and 100 percent delicious. Bravo, Macayo's Grill & Cantina-you've really knocked it out of the park with this tasty little taco!
Other new items on the menu include queso fundido, Mexican corn, green chile pork stew, tinga quesadilla, rolled tacos and street tacos. Feel free to continue digging in to some of the beloved menu items that have stood the test of time including enchiladas, tamales, tacos, carnitas, burros, chimichangas, a gluten-free menu and much more.
Get your tequila on with a large selection of blanco, reposado, anejo and ultra premium tequila selections. Or indulge your south-of-the-border hankering with a Cucumber Cilantro, Skinny Strawberry, Prickly Pear, Blood Orange, Spicy Pineapple or an Arizona Sunset margaritas. If I could pick just one, I'd go with the Spicy Pineapple Margarita that boasts Cabo Wabo Blanco Tequila, Licor 43, pineapple3 juice, freshly squeezed lime juice and a slice of fresh jalapeno-simply an exceptional and refreshing cocktail. The sangria is pretty great, too, and if wine and beer are more your speed, Macayo's Mexican Grill & Cantina has you covered.
Macayo's CEO Sharissa Johnson relayed that deciding to evolve the Macayo's Scottsdale location included careful consideration. So far, the Scottsdale and Shea Macayo's will be the only one with the name Macayo's Mexican Grill & Cantina. "It really was an open market and we're making this location our test market," Johnson explains. "We'll be taking the things that work here and roll them out at some of our other locations."
