Tempe Mission Palms Hotel Welcomes New Executive Chef, John du Toit

The Mission Grill Restaurant is in the middle of a cuisine renaissance! For years, out-of-town visitors and guests to Tempe Mission Palms Hotel & Conference Center have enjoyed a bountiful menu reflecting the flavors of the Southwest. Now, Executive Chef John du Toit will be completely reimagining the menu at The Mission Grille as well as the banquet/receptions menus. “I’ll be redoing all the menus in the next few weeks,” says du Toit. “I’ll bring the food up. I’m elevating it.”

Tempe.com got a preview of a few of the new menu items during a recent visit. The first creatively delicious dish is the potato sticks poached in duck fat and complemented with radish sprouts and a roasted chipotle sour sauce. You could think of these as upscale French fries, but with an entirely unique flavor.

Avocado toast is currently all the rage, and Chef du Toit is introducing a few different versions onto The Mission Grille’s menu, including egg with roasted garlic tips and pimentos, another version with hickory smoked bacon, and finally another with strawberries and micro lime with mint and sugar foam.

The menu will feature more of a mission style menu and to that end Chef du Toit is introducing his own Mission street tacos with braised beef cheeks, Spanish chayote slaw, cilantro chimichurri and grilled jalapenos. Rounding out the sneak preview were the fire roasted tomatillo chicken enchiladas with goat milk cheese, fall harvest vegetables and ghost peppers.

Just as the menu at The Mission Grille will now be evolving, so too, is Tempe Mission Palms. In the coming months, the entire property will be renovated and remodeled, starting with the hotel lobby. The new theme will be a mid-century modern interpretation of the property’s mission look. The new décor and aesthetics will be entirely unique to Tempe’s only full-service hotel!
