PIE – Butterscotch Pecan Pie from Grassroots Kitchen & Tap/Available at Twisted Grove Parlor + Bar

There is pie and then there is pie. Grassroots Kitchen & Tap’s Executive Chef, Christopher Collins beamed with pride as he brought Chef Garrett Verhage to my table to talk about the selection of pies that he oversees at The Shops at Town and Country at Town and Country restaurant.

The top sweet for the pie category is the Grassroots’ butterscotch pecan pie that is available exclusively at Twisted Grove Parlor + Bar in Scottsdale, the sister restaurant to Grassroots. A decadent twist on a Southern favorite, this award-winning pie is the stuff of sweet dreams. The pie is a slight departure from a typical pecan pie because of the more substantial, custard-style filling housed in a perfectly executed graham cracker crust and topped with a dollop of house made whipped cream topped with a smattering of candied pecans. The pecans are plentiful and the kiss of butterscotch is literally perfect. Best of all, the pie is not too sweet. You can safely enjoy a slice by yourself (the pecan pie is so good, you may not want to share) and not feel overwhelmed. The ice cream by itself is worth two big thumbs up! Brave to chefs Collins and Verhage on creating this slice of heaven! Honorable mentions go to the seasonal apple pie and key lime pie available at Grassroots locations.

DESSERT CRAFT COCKTAIL – 3 of a Kind from CHAR Kitchen + Bar

The 3 of a Kind craft cocktail is a sweet drink available at CHAR Kitchen + Bar and comes from the creative mind of Justin Czarnecki, who developed the entire cocktail menu. This drink is perfect to savor before your fresh Mediterranean meal at the restaurant, with dessert or just as a great cocktail to enjoy with a group of friends.

The beautiful drink includes Plantation 3 Stars Rum from France that imparts a distinctive pineapple flavor, St. George Spirits Raspberry Liqueur and a kick of Orgeat Syrup, made with almonds. The fresh and fruity cocktail boasts a special flavor profile because of the introduction of the almond flavor and the cocktail is a compliment to either dinner or dessert. In fact, the 3 of a Kind is a perfect accompaniment for CHAR’s chocolate mocha hazelnut cake!

SOUTHWEST INSPIRED DESSERT – Deep Fried Ice Cream from El Palacio Mexican Restaurant & Cantina

Perhaps no other dessert reflects the spirit of the Southwest like fried ice cream. When the mood strikes, El Palacio Mexican Restaurant & Cantina is the “go to” place for this decadent dessert. Master Chef Anthony Serrano is a highly awarded chef and his deep fried ice cream certainly imparts his passion and desire to leave his guests with a thrilling dessert at the end of lunch or dinner.

The deep fried ice cream is literally served in a delicious tortilla style dish! Choose from French vanilla or chocolate ice cream, rolled in a flaky coating, deep fried and then topped with your choice of coffee liqueur, amaretto, chocolate, strawberries, or a sweet mix of strawberry and coconut.

CAKE – Cakebites from The Sweet Tooth Fairy

I know, I know. It’s not cake in the traditional sense, but I’m just not a huge fan of cake. So, I compromised a bit and went with something very similar that I do love! Cakebites from The Sweet Tooth Fairy are bite-sized cakes without a whole slice of commitment. Although cakebites are just two bites (or maybe one bite if you’re craving cake), they definitely are large on taste and creativity.

My six piece sample box of cakebites from Sweet Tooth Fairy (great gift idea) included chocolate/caramel/peanut butter/pretzel crunch, red velvet, lemon, M&M’s, toasted coconut, and cookies and cream. These devilishly delicious little cake morsels are moist, tasty and a fun idea for holiday parties or even a housewarming gift! There are lots of wonderful standard flavors, plus great seasonal offerings, too.

GELATO – Rum Raisin Gelato from Frost Gelato SanTan Village

Ice cream is fantastic, but gelato gets the spotlight this time. Frost Gelato in San Tan Village is typically packed with people and for good reason. The global chain boasts a beautifully clean store, gorgeous gelato displays and something to appeal to the taste palate of anyone. For the purposes of this article, I thought outside of the usual flavors and went with the rum raisin. Because, really… Where do you find rum raisin anything?

The rum raisin gelato included yummy bits of plump raisins and the rum flavor did not overwhelm. I also love that gelato has less calories and fat than typical ice cream. And because I’m game for anything, I asked for a decorative orchid on top of my dish, because they’re edible. I wouldn’t recommend ordering an orchid with your gelato, but good gravy, isn’t it pretty? Order something different the next time you order gelato and try the rum raisin at Frost!

CUPCAKE-Lemon Glam Cupcake from The Coffee Shop at Agritopia

I’ve already noted that I’m not a huge fan of cake. But, cupcakes? For some reason, that’s a different story. I’ve tried cupcakes from just about every place you can think of, but the beautiful simplicity of the lemon glam cupcake at The Coffee Shop at Agritopia is far and away my favorite, year after year. In 2010, the shop’s cupcake-y goodness took top honors on TV show, “Cupcake Wars” and has continued to garner fans ever since.

Although there are many different flavors of cupcakes available on a rotating basis, lemon glam is always a staple at the fun and fashionable breakfast and brunch spot in Gilbert. The cupcake itself has moist, yet substantial cake, with a lighter style frosting cloud that does not weigh you down or overwhelm the perfect lemon flavor. Cupcake flavors like vanilla glam, lemon glam and birthday cake are always available, and you will also find chocolate chip cookie dough, mixed berry, red velvet, birthday cake, sweetheart cherry, coconut and some seasonal flavors. Check out the vegan cupcakes, too! The double chocolate vegan cupcake is a must!

WHOOPIE PIE – Snickerdoodle Whoopie Pie from The Coffee Shop at Agritopia

Clearly, there is bakery magic in the kitchen at The Coffee Shop at Agritopia. If you have never tried a whoopie pie, your experience should begin and end at The Coffee Shop. This time around, the crown goes to the snickerdoodle whoopie pie. If you’re not familiar with whoopie pies, they’re essentially two fluffy cookies with a layer of dreamy creamy whip made from the essence of stars, rainbows, unicorn flight and mermaid giggles. Seriously, they’re that good.

The cinnamon-kissed deliciousness of the snickerdoodle whoopie pie is outstanding, the lemon is wonderful, and the seasonal pumpkin whoopie pie is a flavor treat that is also a great idea for parties. Also, try funfetti or cookies and cream.

UNIQUE DESSERT - Cowboy Candy Bar from LON’S at The Hermosa

LON’s signature cowboy candy bar dessert defies explanation. Decadent, entirely sinful, yet heavenly, dessert nirvana – These are all things that could attempt to describe this entirely unique dessert. I would recommend enjoying this exceptional sweet ending out on the patio while enjoying the evening ambiance.

The dessert includes chili-spiced ganache, marcona almonds, crispy feuilletine all wrapped in a thin layer of decadent chocolate with salted caramel sauce, and served with a petite scoop of caramelia ice cream. I can guarantee that you have never had a dessert quite like this one and it certainly speaks to the unique qualities of the Hermosa Inn property where LON’s is located. If you want to impress a date or a guest, LON’S at The Hermosa is the place.

GRAB-N-GO CONFECTION - Fluff it Marshamallows

“Naked” marshmallows, stuffed marshmallows, chocolate dipped marshmallows, variety packs and more… Fluff it Marshmallows is a delicious craft dessert spot in Gilbert that will tantalize anyone’s taste buds. The peppermint marshmallows dipped in chocolate are a decadent way to spoil the guests at your next party. Half sinful, half heavenly and 100 percent delicious, this is one sweet treat that will have you ushering in the holiday season!

Some of the naked marshmallow flavors include vanilla, horchata, cotton candy and strawberry banana. Stuffed marshmallows include cookies and cream, German chocolate cake, toasted coconut, birthday cake, pumpkin spice, Fruity Pebbles and much more. My tip of the hat goes to the chocolate dipped peppermint gourmet marshmallows. ‘Tis the season for this pillowy, fluffy peppermint confection!

INTERNATIONALLY-INSPIRED DESSERT – Traditional Belgian Waffle from Chocolade van Brugge

The liege Belgian waffles at Chocolade van Brugge in Scottsdale are one of the best kept dessert secrets in the Valley… until now! The dreamy flavor and texture of these waffles comes from a favorite Belgian family recipe courtesy of store owner, Frank Verbeke.

The dessert style waffle is made-to-order with brioche dough and pearl sugar, that when cooked, creates a soft and spongy waffle with sweet crispy edges. It is then topped with Biscoff European Cookie Butter and slices of fresh bananas. Other Belgian waffle versions include toppings such as strawberries, whipped cream, chocolate, Nutella or caramel sauce. Or, get creative and mix and match according to your own taste. Sweet dreams are made of this!
