Craig Robertson, the new boys’ and girls’ varsity swim head coach at Notre Dame Prep, wanted to get back to the swim world and give back to the sport that helped shape his life.
Robertson graduated from San Jose State University where he was a four-time All-American in water polo and swimming. He was on the United States swim team in 1980 and has coached swimming and water polo for 25 years.
His recent relocation to Scottsdale from California took him away from coaching his beloved sport. But just as NDP had an opening for a head swim coach, Robertson felt a pull to get back to coaching.
“I love giving back to swimming and to education,” Robertson said. “I like to mix fun with hard work, but mostly I like to win.”
Robertson said he is excited about inheriting the girls’ reigning state championship team and the boys’ state runner-up team. “It’s great to have top athletes on your team, but you’ve gotta have depth,” he said. The new coach plans to implement his tried and true methods for improving all the swimmers on the team. “I’ve turned some good swimmers into great swimmers,” he added.
“We are so fortunate that Craig was looking to get back to coaching, just as we were looking for a new head swim coach,” NDP athletic director Monica Barrett said. “We’re lucky and blessed to have him.”
Living in Scottsdale with his wife, Susan Marques, Robertson is an executive in the freight and transport industry. He swims two miles a day to stay fit, and he looks forward to racing NDP swimmers at practice soon.
